Open-Air Operetta on Kaiserwiese

Open-Air Operetta on Kaiserwiese

This year, Vienna is celebrating 200 years of Johann Strauss and is celebrating the composer with exhibitions, performances, workshops, concerts, installations, and much more! Two of the events honoring Johann Strauss will take place on the Kaiserwiese in the Prater: a performance of the open-air operetta Indigo and the 23 Robbers and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra's Prater Picnic.

Indigo and the 23 Robbers

Director Anna Bernreitner has transformed Strauss's first operetta into an open-air traveling format that will tour Vienna and stop at the Kaiserwiese on Monday, June 2nd, 2025. If you're wondering what the operetta is about, we have a description for you:

A Viennese couple is stranded on the exotic island of King Indigo. She, Fantasca, ends up in his harem but manages to keep the king at bay. He, Janio, makes himself popular as an advisor to Indigo, who refuses to accept that his kingdom is facing a crisis: the army is weak, the storeroom is empty, and robbers are supposedly wreaking havoc in the forest. To escape the king's clutches, Fantasca arranges for Indigo to offer a reward: whoever catches the robbers will marry her. While Indigo is busy elevating herself to godhood, Fantasca disguises herself and the other harem ladies as robbers and allows herself to be captured by Janio. Then, by chance, a ship bound for Vienna passes by and takes the lovers and everyone else who is tired of island life on board.
