Kugelmugel
The orange spherical building on Antifaschismusplatz (or Antifascism Square) is not just a striking structure, but also an art project and political statement. In 1971, Edwin Lipburger erected it in Lower Austria as a symbol of his commitment to the round shape. Five years later, Lipburger proclaimed the (not officially recognized) Republic of Kugelmugel. In 1982, the Republic of Kugelmugel was moved to its current location in Vienna’s Prater – with the support of the then City Councillor for Cultural Affairs, Helmut Zilk.
Today, Linda Treiber serves as its President. Following extensive restoration, the Republic of Kugelmugel is once again open for state visits.
